The Citizenship Act requires a person to reside in Canada for 3 in 4 years immediately before the date of the application. There is also a minimum yearly requirement of stay in Canada.
You must be able to understand and speak basic English or French, and know about:
- Canadian history
- Geography
- Government
- The rights and responsibilities of citizenship
Note: you will need to pass a written and/or oral test (effective mid 2015 persons between 14 and 64 years of age have to take a written test).
You must not: be subject to any prohibition under the Citizenship Act and/or be under a removal order (asked by Canadian officials to leave Canada).
